Medical help underground

1942

Břetislav Lyčka provided treatment and cover documents. His story shows professional expertise working through a resistance network.

Karlín doctor Břetislav Lyčka belonged to the Sokol resistance organization JINDRA. Meetings took place at his home and surgery. As a reviewing physician, he also helped certify cover sick leave for the parachutists.

He treated Kubiš at the Piskáček home in Vysočany on the evening of 27 May. That location must be distinguished from his own Karlín surgery: trusted contacts brought medical assistance to the wounded man.

In July, Lyčka hid with carpenter Ludvík Vaněk in Ouběnice. When the Gestapo surrounded the house on 21 July, he and teacher František Kotrba took their own lives. Nazi persecution of helpers continued after the final battle in the church.

Places

Assistance crossed households and professions. This journey’s final chapter explores cooperation with the people around the Orthodox church.
