Josef Valčík
SILVER A member · ANTHROPOID collaborator
2 November 1914–18 June 1942
Josef Valčík was deputy commander of SILVER A, which gathered intelligence and maintained contact with London. After his cover was blown, he went to Prague and worked with ANTHROPOID’s men. He spent his final weeks with them in the Resslova Street refuge, dying in the crypt on 18 June 1942.
SILVER A
SILVER A landed on the same night as ANTHROPOID. Its task was contact with the domestic resistance and London; Valčík served as deputy commander.
Moving to Prague
After exposure, Valčík had to leave his original network in the Pardubice region. He connected with ANTHROPOID in Prague and helped prepare the attack.
The crypt
After hiding in the Orthodox church, he defended the crypt on 18 June with Gabčík, Hrubý and Švarc. He died there.
