Jaroslav Piskáček
ČKD designer · Vysočany Sokol leader · ANTHROPOID supporter
3 May 1897–24 October 1942
Jaroslav Piskáček led the Vysočany Sokol branch and helped organize ANTHROPOID’s Prague support. His contacts secured shelters, equipment transport, documents and medical assistance. After the attack, he lodged the wounded Jan Kubiš and arranged treatment. The Nazis murdered him, his wife Antonie, son Miroslav and mother-in-law Anna Hrušková in Mauthausen.
Vysočany and Sokol
A Vysočany native, Piskáček studied a technical subject and worked as a designer at ČKD. He lived with Antonie and Miroslav in Na Břehu. He organized a clandestine five-person cell within the local Sokol branch, initially also helping arrested resistance members’ families.
Assistance after the landing
After Kubiš and Gabčík arrived, he helped secure the equipment hidden near Nehvizdy and find further helpers. With Sokol colleagues, he connected apartments in Libeň, Vysočany and elsewhere.
He brought the injured Gabčík to physician Stanislav Hrubý. Later they arranged employment books and cover sick-leave certificates, enabling the pair to move around the Protectorate without the usual suspicions over documents.
On 27 May
After the attack Kubiš came to Piskáček’s apartment with an eye injury. Through Antonín Oktábec, Jaroslav summoned Břetislav Lyčka, who treated him that evening. The Piskáčeks also helped remove the bicycle left in Libeň.
The family’s arrest
The Gestapo arrested Piskáček at ČKD on 13 July, detained Antonie and her mother Anna Hrušková that day, and caught Miroslav four days later. Jaroslav, Antonie and Anna were subsequently imprisoned in Terezín’s Small Fortress. All four were murdered in Mauthausen on 24 October 1942.
