The refuge in Resslova Street

late May–18 June 1942

Resistance members and church helpers sheltered seven soldiers. On 18 June, the German assault on the church ended their final defence.

After the attack, Jan Zelenka-Hajský, Jan Sonnevend, Petr Fafek and chaplain Vladimír Petřek connected resistance and church assistance. Kubiš, Gabčík, Opálka, Valčík, Bublík, Hrubý and Švarc gradually gathered in the Cathedral of Saints Cyril and Methodius. They did not all belong to ANTHROPOID: the refuge brought together men from several teams.

The refuge needed daily food and communications. Petřek, Zelenka, the Moravecs, the Fafeks and others supplied food and messages. The crypt was not meant as a permanent solution; Petřek sought other safe apartments.

The German assault began on 18 June. Opálka, Bublík and Kubiš fought in the gallery; Gabčík, Valčík, Hrubý and Švarc in the crypt. All seven died that day. Sources disagree on some circumstances of death; the place accounts and individual profiles distinguish established details from disputed ones.

Places

The seven men’s deaths did not end the story. Nazi repression continued against helpers, relatives and whole communities.
